Black Trans Project / The Gift / April 2021

‘The Gift’ a Black Trans Project mixtape OUT Now.

Black Trans Project exists to support and improve the wellbeing of the Black Trans(gender) community.

With this tape, we are raising funds to further support Black trans performers, musicians, and artists. We aim to create community, raise visibility, joy, and fun against a backdrop of further disenfranchising due to the effects of the Covid pandemic.

'The Gift' is a musical nugget made by and for the community. Featuring contributions from Honey Dijon, Angel-Ho, Karnage Kills, Ms. Carrie Stacks, and Akashi Zari Lee.

As part of Trans Visibility Day, we celebrate the achievement of Georgina Beyer the world's first openly Trans Mayor and MP, and their recorded responses on visibility are also included in 'The Gift' mix.

Objectives for fundraising

As we start on our journey to imporve and support the wellbeing of the Black Trans Community we are keen to help using our cultural resources. As established POC artist ourselves we are looking to mentor other artists and to use our skills and expieirnce to help the individuals we work with to develop their own practices. As a grassroots organisation we are looking to firstly support thoses in our immediate community and as we sustainably grow the project we would hope to engage with the wider community and its complex needs.

We would like to raise 5K  If we go over to give to a non for profit or charity that works to improve the wellbeing of the Black Trans Community.

Keep fundraising till the end of the month or until we have reached the target ?

Giving money to …

Equal amounts to be given to the artists ( Karnage, Angel-Ho, Akashi, Ms. Carrie Stacks ) we are working with as part of 'The Gift' EP and for us to offer to work with them as mentors/supporter/producers on a future project.

Georgina Beyer has requested a piece of custom-made clothing to be made that reflects her Maori heritage for future public engagements rather than cash.

Angel Ho / @angel_h0 / photo @shiraz.the.alien

Angel-Ho is a Musician & Creative Director from South Africa Cape Town. Angel places contemporary social issues in performance, drag, and a digital space whereby they deconstruct the powers of oppression. In other words, diving into the fantasy of reality of being a feminine gender non-conforming queer African body with the capacity to critique the history we create as a society.

Georgina Beyer / #Georginabeyer / photo @govgeneralnz

We recently spoke with Black Trans icon Georgina Beyer who shared their thoughts on affirmation, activism,  being a trailblazer, indigenous trans cultures, colonialism, and remembering those who have died needlessly.

Georgina Beyer is a politician and performer who has broken unprecedented ground for transgender people. She was elected to the Carterton District Council in 1993 and elected Mayor in 1995. She served two terms as Member of Parliament for Wairarapa. She was the world’s first transgender mayor and the first transgender person to be elected to Parliamentary office. She served on several government committees and supported the Prostitution Reform Act 2003 and the Civil Union Act 2004. She has delivered presentations at international conferences and was a Board member of the New Zealand Aids Foundation. Prior to her career in politics, Ms. Beyer was a sex worker and an openly transgender actor and performer.

Honey Dijon / @honeydijon / #ricardogomes

Honey Dijon is a DJ, producer, and musician, born in Chicago and based in New York and Berlin. Honey Dijon has carved her own path in the global underground electronic music scene, not defined by genre or era. “As a producer, her reputation for bringing this knowledge to her forward-thinking creations is growing all the time” - Resident Advisor

Karnage Kills / @karnagekills / @samuel.ibram

Karnage Kills is a rapper carving out his own lane with striking, unapologetic energy. A fierce live performer and lyricist, Karnage pushes the boundaries of genre and challenges norms by addressing issues that have long been ignored in mainstream music.

Karnage describes himself as proudly femme and isn’t afraid to take his rightful place in an arena that has been traditionally dominated by masculinity. With his forthcoming releases, Karnage wants to remind the industry that talent isn’t determined by race, gender, or sexuality.

Ms Carrie Stacks / @ms.carriestacks / @yasser abubeker

Ms. Carrie Stacks is an icon. From South London, she is a Dj and musician whose involvement as one of the founders of the creative and diverse QTIPOC happening and club night PDA has brought her legions of followers. On the recent album 'Q+A' which Carrie wrote, produced, recorded, and performed, she has created a truly unique sound. Her lyrics are raw and honest with emotional power and given an echoey delivery, which is overlayed on swelling synth harmonies and minimal beats. The music very much talks directly to Carrie's world of halcyon dancefloors, late-night partying, and the following day's inevitable dreamy reflections of the night before. Rather than leaving a bad taste in your mouth, Carrie's music has you coming back for more flavor and wanting to taste the night before all over again.
