VFD Film Night No.1: Tuesday 12th April

March 21, 2016 admin
film-night-12th.jpg

Remember, remember the 12th of April. ⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂

VFD plays host to a new series of film nights looking at various relevant social & cultural issues, starting with London’s favourite elephant in the room - gentrification.

⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂

FILM NO.1: Everyday Fascism (11:44), by Kola Grime, looks at the disparity between a marketed housing ‘standard’ and the reality of living in cramped overly expensive homes.

FILM NO.2: The Death of Queer London (11:36), by Nicky Chue & Jack Hamilton, investigates the loss of vibrant culture in London due to redevelopment.

FILM NO.3: London: City in Crisis (9:54), by Ellys Sugarman, centres around a crisis of rehoming, the destruction of community and incompetence when dealing with the redevelopment of social housing in London.

⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂⌂

Special guest, Dr Ben Campkin joins us to chair the night & host panel discussions with the filmmakers.

Sunday~Funday: Yummy Mummies: Sunday 6th March

February 22, 2016 admin
Sunday_Funday_6th-March.jpg

Its back this weekend.. SHORT VERSION:

Back yet again for another mind altering visit to the underbelly of every ultimate weekend SUNDAY~FUNDAY is your go-to Sunday night queer performance and dress-up dance party at VFD. For those in search of a final moment to saver the weekend SUNDAY~FUNDAY brings the big toys out for one final play with contagiously danceable music, an infamous late-night drag show, ice-breaker/hang-over games, snazzy drinks, ambitious party and costume themes and always a double dose of fun! This time round it's Mother's Day, so Dress like your Mum and Dance like your Dad, thems the rules! 7:00PM-LATE, £5 on the door Message Maxi More for guestlist LONG VERSION

(Sounds of church-bells and birdsong)

Mothering Sunday is a holiday celebrated by Catholic and Protestant Christians in some parts of Europe. It falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter.

During the sixteenth century, people returned to their mother church, the main church or cathedral of the area, for a service to be held on Laetare Sunday. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their “mother church”, usually with their own mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented by conflicting working hours, and servants were not given free days on other occasions. Mother’s Day celebrations take place in almost every culture and country upon the planet, and each have their own traits and customs to celebrate the power, strength and generosity of Mothers.

Taking inspiration from by-gone times, as well as contemporary contextual influences, SUNDAY~FUNDAY is throwing the MOTHER of all parties to celebrate mothers, the mother in all of us and the Mother Church of VFD. Maxi More and her friends invite you into our Mother Church, VFD, to pay respect to the goddesses that protect queer space and shelter each and every creature that visits her.

We also invite you to become Mother’s for the evening, as we all have maternal energy within us that can be utilised to nurture creativity and spread positivity. Come dressed as the ultimate Yummy Mummy, complete with elaborately named sprogs, enormous frappaccinos, fake-furr gillet and uggs. Or perhaps you’d like to become an expectant mother, glowing skin and “baby-on-board” broached?

The night will include the ultimate Mother’s-Day playlist, perfect for reverberating maternal energy out into the universe. Our now infamous late-night drag show will bring together Mother’s of all kind, from the irresponsible, the impossible, even the celestial Mother her self may make an appearance. Yummy Mummy refreshments and pop-up Belsize Park style café will accommodate any gaggle of Mums who may want to swap tips on the best eco friendly recycled yak hair nappies, and macro-biotic Himalayan rice crackers. Also included: try before you buy Baby-Bumps and pre-natal yoga classes, not to mention all our usual games and antics.

So get Dad to look after the kids, or just bring them along too, and get into the yummy Mummy vibe, for a night of maternal mayhem.
