As we move between different identities, languages, cultures and borders,“freedom” starts to mean different things. After moving to another country, are we really “more free”?
This exhibition grew out of Queer China UK’s community research project, How Are We Doing in London? — A Report on the Lived Experiences of Chinese LGBTQIA+ Diaspora from Mainland China Vol. 1. We hope to move beyond the words and data of the report itself, creating a space where the stories, memories, and reflections of our community can be shared, discussed and connected.
The theme of the exhibition was inspired by a community research craft workshop, where one participant wrote: “The freedom from ( ).”
No matter where you are in life right now, whether you are facing new compromises or embarking on a new chapter, we hope this exhibition offers moments of resonance or comfort. And we hope that, one day, we can all experience the “freedom” we are looking for.
